Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in high school. In the midst of only two years in school the young woman left to pursue an acting profession. After that, she was an hat-checker at the nightclub before calling it quits and returning to Boston. There she earned a living as an usherette by day, and at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job.
